I have a test in Chemistry and need help!!!?

the test is on naming bonds i understand covalent bonds but once you get into ionic bonds it gets confusing. First of all i don't understand how u have to balance off the formula. I also don't understand the transition metals, and with the roman numerals.And polyatomic ions are just as confusing to me please help!!!
