IMPORTING A DVD INTO THE COMPUTER?

How do you import a short film on a DVD from the disc drive to your computer. I have windows movie maker but it doesn't seem to do the job. I have ulead DVD factory for Toshiba but I can't figure that out either. Can someone give this computer illiterate a step by step instruction as to how to accomplish this feat. Thanks in advance.
