Is anybody else awful at discovering symbolism in literature?

It's not the writer who's the idiot; it's the teacher/yst who feels he/she has to find symbolism in everything. I'm not saying writers don't consciously put any symbolism in their work, only that much of what academics find symbolic was never dreamed of by the author/artist. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
